En Pole charges.
The Pole Charge is a 12-lb pack charge (TNT) which consists of 24 x ½ lb. TNT blocks, fixed to the end of a 18-foot long wooden pole . Its design is made in such a way as to easily shove it into pillbox embrasures, from a more or less safe distance . The head of the charge (tightly held together by a wooden cover and friction tape) swivels in order to allow it to be always placed flush against a vertical surface . Two lines of primacord run down the pole, from charge-head to bottom, and are connected to the 2 igniters placed there . The twin M1 Friction Type Fuze Lighter assemblies were used to prevent any misfires (double system) . Pole charges were usually constructed at unit level .
